High School Dance Festival Review

State HS Dance Festival

Feb. 25, 2017- Westwood HS

Teachers’ Meeting Notes & Festival Info.

  • After enjoying breakfast and some networking, welcome & introductions were made. Kelli asked who were first timers at the festival, and there were a few. It’s always great to have newcomers as well as our repeaters. Then Kelli led introductions by asking for first year teachers to introduce themselves, then 2nd year teachers and so on.
  • A huge thank you to our biggest supporter, EPT, for providing breakfast once again this year! Enjoyed by all.
  • Heartfelt thanks to Jeanette Layton for hosting, and to all who took on the different jobs! Mary Ann Herding and Kelli Abramovich- teachers, Candy Jimenez and Kyle Taylor-class registration, Amanda Kinnaird and Micah Kriston- adjudication, April Leher-t-shirts, Tiffany Jones- program book, Westwood students -tech. And, of course to all the teachers who attended and brought your remarkable students.
  • Performance Procedures: Jeanette went over some procedures for the performances.
  • 42 schools, over 50 dance educators. 664 students attending.
  • Please send any feedback about the festival. It can only improve with your input.

  • Margie Wolf from EPT shared the latest travel opportunities from EPT, and provided packets. Looking for travel for your students? EPT is the way to go.

Vendor Materials

  • Many vendors supplied flyers, pamphlets, information: Movement Source, Wight Noise, Human Kinetics, colleges, and many more. Lynn encouraged teachers to take a look and take information.
  • InspiredArts supplied posters, flashcards for review. Kelli gave a testimonial for their products. They are offering a discount for AzDEO. The flyer with the link for the discount is attached with this summary.

  • Kathy Lindholm Lane Dance Educator of the Year Award: Rachel Wight (last year’s KLL awardee) and Holly Kemper presented the award to our 2017 awardee, Amy Crow from Valley Vista HS. Congratulations Amy! Well deserved.

Volunteer Recognition

  • As a way to recognize our fabulous volunteers, the board felt they should be given some small token. It was decided to give homemade cookies, so cookies were given to 14 volunteers.
  • Lynn mentioned that if you email your volunteer hours, you will receive a certificate of hours. Just estimate the best you can what your hours might be.

NHSDA Report:

  • 5 new chapters since the last festival: Secondary-AZ School for the Arts, Salpointe; Junior-Fees MS, Bricks Studio, Learning Foundations for the Arts. Congratulations!
  • Since Sept, 13 secondary students and 3 higher-ed (GCU) have been inducted.

  • Vendors joining us this year were: Grand Canyon University, ASU, WeartoStart, Natalie & Co Dancewear, Southern Utah University, Mesa Community College.  Teachers were encouraged to visit their tables.

Future Festivals:

  • Location: Cori Hailmann from Raymond G. Kellis offered to host.  Thank you so much Cori.
  • Job Assignments: As most of our fabulous festival volunteers had been doing the festival jobs for 3 or 4 years and some forever, it seemed time to pass on most of the jobs to other people, and luckily we had volunteers. Not surprising with our group of fabulous dance educators. Rachel Wight offered to take over t-shirts from April (who has been doing it since we started selling t-shirts). Cori Lee and Kelly Scovel offered to learn class scheduling from Candy and Kyle. Samantha Brown offered to take over securing teachers, learning from Kelli and Mary Anne. Amanda Kinnaird and Micah Kriston will continue to handle adjudication. Tiffany White will continue with the program.  Many, many thanks to all of our volunteers. Your work is appreciated more than you know!

  • Brief discussion about a leadership camp. Bob Laliberte, a theater person attending, shared info on theater’s camp. A suggestion was to attend the theater camp until we were ready to offer our own. Andrea sent a link for theater’s leadership camp in case anyone might be interested- http://www.arizonathespians.com/camp/

  • As always, the raffle is a fun way to end the meeting. Not surprisingly, our dance community and fellow teachers come through.  And this year, we had a couple of national/international companies donate. Kelli donated a basket of dance items, April donated a gift card for Mary Kay, Mary Anne donated 2 tickets to a Movement Source performance and a Movement Source t-shirt, Rachel donated 2 Wight Noise t-shirts and 2 tickets to a Wight Noise performance, Human Kinetics donated 2 books and a DVD, and  InspiredArts donated one of their kits and one CD.

Thanks to all who donated items and helped secure them.

Because of all of you who volunteered and attended, our 32nd festival was another successful festival. We have had positive feedback from teachers.

Wonderful to see all of you and meet new faces. Looking forward to next year!
